Sun Safety
Ultraviolet (UV) rays are part of our atmosphere and can damage the DNA of our skin. Two types of UV rays are UVA and UVB. These rays can create a tanned look, as well as cause sunburn or skin redness, eye damage, premature wrinkling, premature aging, and skin cancer. Skin damage from UV rays is cumulative over your lifetime. Unless you take steps to protect yourself, it will only get worse and cannot be reversed. Research shows that up to 80% of visible skin changes attributed to aging are caused by the sun.
OSU Extension offers DermaScan skin viewings to raise awareness of the skin damage caused by the sun. These scans are accompanied with easy-to-follow recommendations for protecting your skin from UV rays. Our Educators also offer interactive lessons and educational resources on protecting your skin, targeted at both adult and youth audiences.
While it’s nice to get out and enjoy the sunshine, be sure to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
